Fatigue

Fatigue in Women

Fatigue is a common problem for women of all ages. Many women report fatigue to their healthcare providers and do not feel they have had a thorough assessment. Instead, it is quickly attributed to a mental or emotional issue.

Fatigue can be caused by a variety of factors not limited to

  • Vitamin and mineral deficiencies such as iron deficiency anemia, low levels of vitamins B and D, and magnesium deficiency

  • Hormone imbalance such as those that occur during menopause, peri-menopause or pregnancy

  • Viral and bacterial infections can also cause fatigue, that can persist well after initial illness

  • Chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and cancer

  • Medications such as antihistamines and antidepressants

  • Sleep disorders such as insomnia and sleep apnea

  • Deconditioning is a loss of fitness that can occur from being inactive. It can cause fatigue, as well as other symptoms such as muscle weakness and shortness of breath

  • Other medical conditions such as thyroid problems, anemia, mental illness, and chronic fatigue syndrome

If you are experiencing fatigue, it is important to see your provider to rule out any underlying medical conditions. A physical exam with your local provider is recommended.
